Notification of Independent Study Program (New)

    Pacific Union School District is offering an online Independent Study Program educational option for the 2021-2022 school year only.  This option is being offered to students whose health may be put at risk by in-person instruction as determined by a parent/guardian.  To begin enrollment, a parent/guardian must complete the Enrollment Request Form, below.

    Pacific Union School District's Independent Study Program

    A signed written agreement must be submitted to Pacific Union within 30 days of the first day of instruction.  Details about the written agreement will be explained at the Independent Study Parent Information Meeting.  A parent may request to disenroll a student from the Independent Study Program by calling the school office at (559) 834-2533.  Pacific Union will move the student to its Full In-Person Instruction Educational Option within 5 days of the request.  A parent may re-enroll a student into the Independent Study Program only one time during the 2021-2022 school year.  Reenrollment shall be done by completing the Independent Study Reenrollment Form.  Parent/guardian must call the school office at (559) 834-2533 to request the Independent Study Reenrollment Form.

    Students in grades Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 3rd must participate in scheduled daily synchronous instruction.  Students in grades 4th through 8th must participate in weekly synchronous instruction and daily live interaction.

    • “Synchronous instruction” means classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communications, and involving live two-way communication between the teacher and pupil. 
      • Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for that pupil pursuant to Section 51747.5
    • “Live interaction” means interaction between the pupil and LEA classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including, but not limited to, wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services, and instruction.
      • This interaction may take place in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.

    All students must meet the requirements for satisfactory educational progress, as outlined in the written agreement.

    Any student who is not in attendance for more than three school days or 60% of instructional days in a week, or who is in violation of the signed written agreement, will begin the tiered re-engagement procedure as outlined in the written agreement.

    Internet access is required.  The student will be provided a school-issued Chromebook for the duration of the Independent Study Program.

    Parents/Guardians have the right to request a meeting prior to enrollment.

    Students enrolled in the program for fewer than 15 school days (cumulative) in a school year are exempt from live interaction, synchronous instruction, tiered re-engagement, and transition plan requirements.
